• Statement

What I have been pursuing through my work has always been based on how “nature” and “un-nature” could have a new relationship.

“Nature and un-nature,” they are not simply conflicting two concepts. Could a computer malfunction be “natural” or “unnatural”? This kind of question triggered my career as an artist. Random errors and bugs occur unexpectedly sometimes give us a glimpse of those significant phenomena that exist faintly, by shaking our given recognition of the relation between “nature” and “un-nature.”

I have been working on my installation works utilizing anonymous junks that finished their original roles such as used machines and old tools, by adding a bit of technology like motors and magnets, although it is not my intension to make audience pay attention to the objects themselves or the functions of technology.

I place each object carefully considering distinctive features that the exhibition space has, such as gravity, humidity, brightness and darkness, and wind direction. Just like excavating ruins looking for habitation sites or dowsing for oil, it is a sensing procedure of hidden energy usually ignored.

Invisible energy that I found through the procedure gets amplified by motors and magnets to feed back to the objects. Such small amount of energy that could be generated by just stirring with a spoon consecutively spreads out in the space to form up a kind of ecosystem.

My work is the environment itself that I discover through the procedure.
Each exhibition space produces its own unique ecosystem, and one work would look differently depending on where it is installed. It could be said that it is an old, and at the same time new way of relationship between “nature” and “un-nature” that derived from errors, chances, and piles of degradation over time.

That would be my pleasure to have audience experience one and only encounter with artworks integrated with the exhibition space.
